Common questions about grooming prices
How much should you charge? What are other groomers earning? Is this even worth it? We get these questions constantly - so we built a calculator to answer them properly. Here's what UK groomers need to know about pricing.
How much should a dog groomer charge in the UK?
Short answer: Between £35-£75 for a full groom, depending on dog size, coat type, and where you're based.
But here's the thing - charging what other groomers charge is exactly how you end up underpaid and overworked. Your prices need to cover your costs: rent, products, insurance, your time, and still leave you with a profit that makes this worth doing.
That's why we built this calculator. Plug in your actual business expenses and see what you should be charging - not what everyone else is charging.
How much do dog groomers make an hour in the UK?
Short answer: Self-employed groomers should aim for £25-£40 per hour after expenses. Salon employees typically earn £11-£15 per hour.
But "per hour" is misleading in grooming. You're not just grooming for an hour - you're answering calls, booking appointments, buying stock, cleaning, doing admin. The calculator factors all this in to show you what your actual hourly rate is once everything's accounted for.
How much to groom a cockapoo?
£40-60 for a full groom in most of the UK, but prices vary wildly by location and groomer experience.
If you're a groomer wondering what to charge for cockapoos specifically - stop pricing per breed and start pricing for your time and expertise. A matted cockapoo that hasn't been brushed in 3 months takes twice as long as a well-maintained one. Price accordingly.
Our calculator helps you work out your baseline hourly rate, then you can adjust per appointment based on condition and time required.
How much do self-employed dog groomers make?
Depends entirely on your costs, pricing, and how many dogs you can physically groom per week.
The uncomfortable truth: many self-employed groomers make less than minimum wage once you factor in rent, insurance, products, equipment, marketing, and unpaid admin time.
The good news: if you price properly and manage your diary well, you can make £25k-45k working 4 days a week.
How long does a full groom take?
1.5-3 hours depending on size, coat type, and condition.
But if you're only counting the time scissors are in your hand, you're missing half the picture. Every appointment includes prep, cleanup, booking time, and the inevitable "can I just ask you something quickly" at pickup.
Smart groomers block 2-3 hours per appointment in their diary - not just grooming time. Tuft's booking system does this automatically so you're not overbooked and knackered by Wednesday.
Is dog grooming profitable in the UK?
It can be - but most groomers are leaving money on the table because they don't know their actual costs.
UK grooming businesses typically run on 20-30% profit margins if you're pricing properly. Problem is, most groomers are guessing at their prices based on what the competition charges, not what they need to charge to actually make money.
The groomers making good money are the ones who know their numbers.
Where do dog groomers make the most money?
London and the South East pay highest (£50-80 per groom), but higher pay = higher costs (rent, living expenses, competition).
The real question isn't where you can charge the most - it's where you can keep the most after costs. That's a much more interesting calculation.
